Foot measurements part 4

DP Angle

The DP angle refers to the medial- lateral balance of the foot. It is a static number but it is one that you have to carefully assess and it is so important to understand where the foot was when the x-ray was taken.

If you have the foot too wide from under the body then of course you will get a number that shows lower on the inside of the foot versus the outside. Making sure that the horse is standing square with his limbs under the body and in a neutral position is so important. If you don’t then you can create an issue making it look like the foot is imbalanced.

With this static measurement it is important to watch the horse walk and make sure that the foot is landing flat rather than just shoeing the horse to a static image. No point trimming to land flat on xray when the conformation of the leg means that with the imbalance the foot is already landing flat. This can create more issues.
