Lumps and bumps

Lumps and Bumps

Often swellings develop and we aren’t 100% sure on what they are. This is where an ultrasound is invaluable. This case was one that developed swelling on the inside of a cannon bone. There was diffuse swelling and a circular round structure. This was moderately painful on palpation. So the worry is what is it?

Thoughts we think about are an abscess or haematoma or even damage to a suspensory ligament etc. So the ultrasound helps us.

With an abscess we are looking for a fluid filled cavity and the fluid may be flocculated and not just black. With a haematoma we often see a fluid centre and then a central area of clot forming.

These images are of a clot forming so we know most likely a haematoma. Lancing them is troublesome as blood is a great place for bacteria to grow so we have to be very careful and allow them to resolve on their own.
