Topical Medications

Recently there have been a number of positive swabs obtained due to the use of topical medications. We advise all clients to be aware of this when they are treating their own horse with a view to competition rules.

There have been a number of positive swabs to the use of human creams that contain Ibuprofen. Owners should be aware that while it may be safe to use some creams on ourselves this is not necessarily the case with our horses. For this reason before using any topical medication please contact us to discuss the implications for competition.

This also is particularly important with the use of herbal supplements. Please be aware that any drug that is deemed to have a calming effect is not suitable for use in a competition horse as per the rules of competition. We recommend that you discuss with us any treatments that your horse may be on so that we can help advise you of the implications of treatment.
