Endoscopy & Electrocardiography
Endoscopy
Endoscopy facilitates the visualisation of otherwise inaccessible areas of the equine respiratory tract. The pharynx, larynx, guttural pouches and trachea can be visualized using a portable fibre optic endoscope.
Visualisation of these structures is essential for the diagnosis of common performance limiting conditions such as left laryngeal hemiplegia (roarers) and exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage (bleeders).
Each of our ambulatory veterinarians is equipped with a portable fibre optic endoscope.
Electrocardiography
An ECG machine uses electrodes placed on specific sites on the horse to detect the changes in electrical activity associated with function of the heart muscle. ECG is the gold standard for identifying cardiac arrhythmias in the horse.
Our clinic has available a portable, battery powered electrocardiography machine. This is valuable technology that enables the fast diagnosis of common cardiac arrhythmias affecting the horse.
ECG is useful on its own and as part of a complete cardiac workup including full blood work and cardiac troponin concentrations. Referral to an equine medicine specialist for cardiac ultrasound may also be offered and encouraged in specific cases.
All our clients are provided written reports, containing a pdf version of their horses' ECG trace upon request.
